Closing Comments

writing-quotes.jpg (638×423)

Throughout this semester of Writers Craft I've picked up a variety of things that I can apply during my post-secondary experience, and also in the work place. I have a better understadning of how to incit proper dialogue into my text. This course has helped me expand my writing vocabulary, and made me feel more comfortable when writing any type of paper. I've really enjoyed using the chrome books, and google drive, I feel like I have more knowledge on how to use them, and I will contunie to use the chromebooks for assignments, and peer-editing in the future.
Mrs. Reidel is a passionate and enthusiastic teacher who does a great job at keeping her students interested and on task. She's the most organized teacher I've had throughout my high school expereince. Mrs. Reidel is very devoted to her work, by editing our work multiple times, and doing extra favours like editing after school hours on her own time. I wish I could take another class of Mrs. Reidels, have a great second semster.  :)

Christmas! What's It All About?

Cheaper-by-the-Dozen-cast-photo-farmhouse-porch.jpg (700×465)

Christmas is fast approaching. It is known internationally as the most celebrated holiday. Christmas is aknowledged as a holiday filled with presents, cookies, Santa, reindeers, sledding, hot chocolate, and many more, although those things are all so exciting to have close during the holidays, Christmas is really about your loved ones. Whether you have a three person family, or a thirty person family, those individuals in your life are who make your Christmas special.
On December the 25th, everyone should forget about how much they need to budget themselves before their next pay check, due to the extravagent gifts they purchased for their loved ones. We should forget about all the fuss before Christmas, and kick our feet up, and enjoy the Holidays with our friends and family, becuase that's what Christmas is really about.

Journalistic Ethics

Stephen Glass

Stephen Glass, a New York Times envied journalist was caught misleading almost his entire background of published stories. He went as far as recording fake messages, and creating social media for people who
don´t exist, for sources.
I believe when a journalist lies, the consquences all depend of the severity of the lies. In the case of Stehpen Glass, he explicitly lied in his articles, and there was rare incounters of his stories that didn´t have a lie occuring in it. If a journalist, had only lied once or twice, depending on the case and popularity of the newspaper, they should receive a warning, or a write up at their work. In relation to Stephen Glass, someone who was repeatedly lied, and made up entire stories, in a perstigious newspaper like the New York Times,  should be fired, and recieve fines. If fined, the money should go towards the newspaper company, as they were entirely manipluated, and now have to suffer from a negative reputation.
Prison does not seem neccesary, I believe therapy is, they could have a serious disorder. I think they are suffering enough, their entire career in journalism is ruined by this point, going to prison is a stretch, but that also depends on the accusations of the stories.
They should be aloud to profit from the books and movies, surrounding him. Its his right, and if people believe that its unfair for him to recieve this money then they should protest by not buying the movie or book.

Poetry Analysis

"Traffic"
By: Jewel Kiltcher
A Night Without Armour, page 121

Jewel Kiltcher is a successful women who pursues, singing, songwriting, guitarist, producer, actress, and anuthor/poet. She has gone as far as recieving four Grammy Award Nominations. "A Night Without Armour," was published in 1998, and expressively explores, heartbreak, insecurtity, and the mind of a women.

Throw yourself
into the traffic of
his desire
       unpredictable
      red sports car
no helmet in hand
your heart a potential
red smear
in the hindsight of
his rear view mirror

Jewel is using the dangers driving in traffic, as a metaphor to the potential heartbreak of commiting yourself and your emotions to someone. She's suggesting that there's no safety guide to love, "throwing yourself into the traffic of his desire," is risky.  Love is a strong force, with, "no helmet in hand," your heart becomes fully exposed.

I enjoy reading her thought out metaphor for love. The imagery of picturing yourself in traffic, in the red sports car, is enticing.

The Right to Vote

06_2_1.jpg (660×440)

Should Canada's voting age be lowered to sixteen?

No, I personally don't agree with the thought of a sixteen year old being able to vote. The process of changing the law to sixteen year olds being able to vote would become too complicated. Although, at the age of sixteen, maintaining a job and a lincence is not an uncommon task, under the age of eighteen, teenagers are stiill unable to sign the majority of their own forms and documents without a parent/gaurdian signature included. So why should you be able to carry out a vote in an election?  I do feel as if the science behind teenage brains has a large influence on why you have to wait until you're eighteen to vote. The majority of female brains mature around the age of eighteen, while male brains usually mature between eighteen and twenety one. It would not make sense to allow sixteen year olds vote, especially considering that males are a potiental five years away from reaching maturity. I believe a great amount of sixteen year olds could take voting seriously, but there would be a lot of knowlege missing in a bunch of votes.

Your Adaptable Mind

The educational video, "The Adaptable Mind," introduces five traits that are commonly known as, "the human ecconmy." These five qualities above, are essential to obtain in our society. I believe I have developed all of these traits to a certain extent, but I need to work on using them more effectively. For example, I am extremely creative when I'm improving at dance class, but when it comes to my creativity for writing or basically anything else, I'm lacking comfort, and confidence. I believe out of the 5 traits, my strongest is curioisity. I'm always asking questions to myself. I love having knowledge, and understanding of concepts, and my curoistity helps me obtain it. How I'm going to contunie my personal growth to have a strong balance of all of these qualities, is my time and effort. Over time I'll have great practice at applying these human skills to my life, as long as I keep up a strong effort. I hope to one day have a strong set of all of the traits above.

Education Is Key?

I think Darryll spoke very well, and passionately about education. I respect how he added in that he wasn't saying education was a bad thing and how it's useful. If he completely bashed getting an education, I would not be interested in what he had to say, that would be incorrect. I agree with his statement about processing information for school. Over half of what I've been taught, important History dates, Math equations, elements in Chemistry, are forgotten in my brain. I do believe education is important, the things that I haven't forgotten when I learned them at school, I apply to my life. I have learned so much about myself throughout my time as a student. Although, I can have a lot going on at school sometimes, and it becomes overwhelming, it gives me a sense of accomplishment. I know when I go get a job one day I will have vaulable skills to apply. The statement that I didn't exactly agree with is, "if you don't build your dreams, someone else will hire you to build theirs." Although it's true, not everyone can preach what he's saying. society needs people who will work for others, there's no such thing as everyone being succesful building their own dreams. Some people are happy working for others. Yes, we have Steve Jobs, and a bunch of others who did not get properly educated, who turned out extremely succesful. We also have successful doctors, and lawyers who have gone through years of the most prestigious education, who are also succesful working for others, and happy with what they have accomplished. I think what he's preaching is correct, but there's hundreds of ways to be succesful with your life, and everyone has their own journey.
